Myofascial Pain

Myofascial Pain Syndrome Treatment With  Chiropractic Care

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a chronic condition affecting the body's soft tissues. MPS is a clinical term used to describe chronic muscle pain. Myofascial pain syndrome often occurs when a muscle, muscle group, or tendon is strained or injured. There may be a production of pain that would be well localized or wide spread or often in conjunction with vague symptoms, such as fatigue, numbness and sleep disturbance.

Myofascial pain syndrome occurs when the tough connective tissue layer called the fascia is injured. This tissue then may tighten and contract putting painful pressure on nerves, muscles, and bones. The area where the injury occurs is referred to as a trigger point in the myofascial layers. Typically these trigger points feel like tight knots in the muscle. At times, these tissues are very sensitive even to light pressure and typically generate pain at the sight but also refer pain to other body areas.

The typical age that myofascial pain syndrome develops is between the ages of 20 and 40. With it being more common in women and sedentary lifestyles. These symptoms that most likely occur are neck pain, low back pain, headaches, arm and leg pain as well as depression, fatigue, and mood disturbances. The myofascial pain syndromes do typically occur with injuries such as incorrect and heavy lifting or overuse on unconditioned muscles. Often times trauma such as work injuries, car accidents, or fibromyalgia can cause myofascial pain syndromes.

How Can Your Chiropractor in Duluth Treat Myofascial Pain?

To treat the adhesions and trigger points in myofascial pain syndromes, chiropractors use a manual therapy known as myofascial release therapy. This typically uses direct pressure or massage upon the trigger points to help relieve myofascial tightness in the muscles. Myofascial therapy has an improved skeletal and muscle alignment by targeting specific areas of the myofascial system. With myofascial release therapy, strengthening, and stretching these can provide relief for patients with restricted range of motion.
